There’s a lot of conversation about what the technology can do. Autonomous systems, multi-step reasoning, AI that doesn’t just respond but acts.\n\nBut the more I look at it, the more it feels like the real shift isn’t technical.\n\nIt’s in UX.\n\nFor years, UX has meant designing how users interact with systems. Click, search, navigate, complete a task. The product responds. The user acts. But as systems become more autonomous, that model starts to break. The user isn’t doing the work anymore. They’re delegating it.\n\nThat raises a more fundamental question than most teams are asking.\n\nDoes UX still stand for “User” when the system is the one taking action?\n\nAgentic AI isn’t just a capability shift. It’s a responsibility shift.\n\nFor most of the last decade, product teams have been building systems that respond to users. Even as AI has been introduced, it has largely followed that same pattern. Generate this. Summarize that. Recommend something based on what just happened.\n\nStill reactive.\n\nAgentic systems change that dynamic. Now the system can decide to act. It can initiate workflows, move across systems, and complete tasks without being explicitly told to in that moment. That sounds like a feature upgrade. In practice, it changes what the product actually is.\n\nWhen a system can act autonomously, the product is no longer just an interface. It becomes a set of decisions. What should the system do on behalf of the user? When should it act? What should it never do?\n\nThose aren’t edge cases. They are the product.\n\nThis is where most teams underestimate the shift. They treat agentic AI like another capability to layer into an existing experience. But autonomy doesn’t sit cleanly inside a feature. It cuts across everything.\n\nUX patterns that used to feel stable start to break down. Linear flows matter less when the system can skip steps entirely. Interfaces designed for control now need to support delegation. The question shifts from “How does the user do this?” to “How does the user trust the system to do this?”\n\nAt that point, UX is no longer about interaction. It’s about delegation and trust.\n\nThe teams that navigate this well don’t start with the technology. They start with the decision. What are the highest-value actions the system should take? Where does autonomy create leverage, and where does it create risk?\n\nBecause once a system can do almost anything, the product is defined by what it chooses to do.\n\nAnd just as importantly, what it chooses not to.\n\nIn that world, UX isn’t just about how a user experiences a product.
